About Ben

Ben is a Seattle-based audio engineer and musician who wears most of the hats a record can ask for: touring musician, songwriter and artist, producer, mix and mastering engineer, session guitarist, and live sound engineer.

His background in audio engineering goes back to high school recording classes, where he first dreamed of capturing the sound of "treeverb" — the way music sits in the air among trees instead of inside four walls. That idea eventually became Outsider Recordings: a five-month project to build a fully mobile, off-grid recording rig.

Off-grid recording appeals to him because it trades the usual studio fight — HVAC hum, passing traffic, the clock on the wall — for creeks, wind, nighthawks, and crickets. The room becomes the landscape, and the record keeps a sense of the place it was made.
